The first 30 days...

If you have kids, or even if you don't, you might recognize this Phineas and Ferb theme song;

"There's 104 days of summer vacation
And school comes along just to end itSo the annual problem for our generationIs finding a good way to spend it..."

Our first 30 days of summer vacation have been pretty busy and pretty darn tiring.  We're trying to pack a bunch of stuff in.  Every year the kids make a summer vacation 'bucket list'.  While we've only crossed off a couple of activities so far, I'm confident we will, hopefully, finish our list successfully!  We've got a lot to do to accomplish that task, time to pack it all in before the 104 days is up!

It turns out this single mom stuff is pretty dang tiring.  There are NO breaks, especially with it being summer vacation!  By the end of the day, after the kids are in bed (much too late during summer vacation), I find myself not wanting to take my very little 'me' time spent on the computer blogging.  I'd rather veg on the couch and watch some pointless reality show!  My brain is fried.  I'm not used to only having 'kid' talk all day and night with no hubby around to have a normal adult conversation with. But I figured that in order to keep up with our summer blogs posts/pictures I had better just sit down and knock this out!  I have a feeling my summer posts will consist of pictures and that's about it!  When I get the blog printed, my favorite part to look at are the pictures anyway.  Who needs a bunch of mumbo jumbo written down anyway?

On to the good stuff...

Living in Idaho means getting the chance to live by my cute little nephew Russell!!  We got the chance to have our first family dinner at our new home and give him his first haircut!  Isn't he a doll?  I could eat him up!  The sweetest little guy.  My kids are infatuated with him.

One bucket list item...go to the zoo. Check.

Despite not being with Dan on Father's Day, we still managed to have a good day.  I spent the day with my dad who is simply amazing.  Ate good food, did some long boarding (we even got Nana to try), and my parents had just gotten home from their trip to Spain where they brought the boys back matching soccer jerseys so we had a photo shoot with them.  (bottom left picture on this collage, 4 generations)
The girls got matching flamenco dresses from Spain.  :)  So cute.

What's a summer vacation without splash parks and snow cones?!

My sister and Lucy came to visit and we spent one afternoon at the river.
Water + Sand + Sunshine + kids = a successful day
KJ was there, he was just too busy to stop for a picture.

My Birthday is always fun as it's close to July 4th, right in the middle of summer, my favorite season.  We had a fantastic day despite the fact that I turned another year OLDER but hopefully wiser!  31 to be exact.  I shared my birthday dinner with my Nana who turned 70 this year!!!  Wouldn't want to share my day with anyone else.  So enjoyable spending the day with so much family.  Love them to pieces.

Nana wanted to go slalom skiing for her 70th birthday celebration.  She's amazing!

*Just my luck, all of a sudden picasa isn't loading so, no more collages on this post.  I'll have to get a bit more selective on what pictures I choose to add*

The kids and I made a last minute trip to CdA and let me just say, it did not go as planned.  I think it should have been a clue to how my trip was going to end up when on the drive up there was a flash flood type storm.  Hydroplaning with just me and three kids in the middle of the night does not make for a relaxing drive.  We made it safe!  Jack had a cough but I didn't think much of it.  It turned in to a temp. and the cough just wasn't going away so after a few sleepless nights and extremely crabby days (me having VERY little patience), I ended up taking him to Urgent care where they x-rayed his chest and told me he had pneumonia.  Poor kid had been miserable and I was frustrated that he was so crabby.  Not my proudest mommy moment.  I've never had a child get pneumonia so I had no idea what to look for.  He got his meds, then he and I drove home late that night and KJ and Liv stayed at Nana's house with my parents who brought them home a couple of days later.  Let's just say that the Rumble Strips on the side of the highway were my friends for that drive home.  I was exhausted after close to a week of no solid sleep.  We also stopped at Taco Bell on the way home cause Jack loves their cinnamon twists and CheeseRoll-Ups.  While standing in line ordering, Jack got 'sick' all over the floor.  It was a mess.  So embarrassing.  So glad that little road trip is behind us.  We now make sure to have him eat plenty of food before he takes his meds.  Lesson learned.
One of our bucket list items was a day at Silverwood.  That's half checked off.  KJ and Liv were able to go and they had a blast!  Wish I had pictures, but KJ rode the big roller coaster for the first time.  Last year he was too scared.  He's changed a lot over the past year.  So proud of him.
Even though the trip wasn't as stress free as I would have liked, I actually had some really great times.  As usual, it's always so nice to go back home.  It's so familiar and comfortable there.  I always love the drive up to Nana's house.  The views are spectacular.

I was able to make it to Kelli's baby shower!  A good friend from high school.  It was fun to see some ladies I hadn't seen in years and years.

No trip to CdA is complete without a hike up Tubbs hill.  Poor Jack didn't make it far, but while the rest of the group finished the hike, I took him to the beach and he had a grand time climbing the rocks and watching the boats.

It was Ironman weekend.  A favorite event of mine to watch.  It is inspiring what the human body can do!  I remember watching my dad participate and finish 3 years ago.  We went to our favorite cheering spot and had fun cheering on the athletes for the run portion of the race.

Can you spot the guy on the bottom of the picture?  He did the race with one leg.  Amazing.

Nana is the world's greatest story teller.  Looking at this picture brings back so many childhood memories.

Sunday Dinner.  The best.  I love my cousins.  We always revert back to acting like children when we are together.  Yes, we planked.  Yes, we took duck face pictures. We played games.  We are so weird and that's why I love us.

This cute cousin of mine just graduated from High School and we had the chance to go to her graduation party!  So fun!

Bradley took Olivia out on a real big girl date.  She is in love with him.  She got to go to lunch, out to frozen yogurt, they went to the pet store and to his work to meet the people he works with.  She felt so special and even got a cute necklace out of him.  That's my girl!

We spent one day downtown, it's fun to be a tourist!  We went to the farmer's market and to the best toy store around!  Figpickles!  Love that place.

Bradley and KJ spent a lot of time together.  Bradley kind of took over my brother's roll while he's gone on his mission.  Everywhere Bradley went, KJ was one step behind.  :)  They stayed up late at night jamming to music.

This was the bummer part of the trip.  Poor poor little Jack.  BUT....thanks to modern medicine, he's almost back to his normal self!!!  Back to fighting with his sister.  Back to eating his food.  Back to the happy Jack we all love!!

Our drive home.  He was asleep within 2 minutes and slept almost the entire trip home.  Poor little guy was completely worn out.

Dan comes home to visit tomorrow night, it's been a VERY long month away from him.  We've never ever been apart for so long and we are anxious and excited to have him come for the week!  I am also excited that I'll be able to take a break and get my hair done!  Kid free!  Is that sad?  I think so, but I can't help it.  It's the little things in life that make me happy!  I might even get a few exercise sessions in!  How great would that be?!

Holy smokes...

I'm WAY behind.  This past month-and-a-half has literally been a whirlwind adventure!  It has been jam-packed with most things good, and a few things not so good.  But such is life, I guess.  I tried catching up on my blog last night but it wouldn't let me sign in.  Not sure why my old blog email wasn't working anymore, but it took me a while to figure out how to change my username and blog email address...yada yada yada...anyway...I'm BACK and I'm ready to try and play a quick game of catch-up!
(as a side note, all the private blogs I read, I'm going to need new invites since I had to change my log-in info.  Please...and thank you!)

First and foremost...WE SURVIVED our big move!  Barely.  I'm exhausted and probably a little more crabby and impatient than I should be!  I will work on that!  We are back 'home' in Idaho and it feels great.  It is nice for once to move to a place and not have to learn street names and directions.  One less thing to worry about!

I don't even know where to start...  I guess I'll start with some of the events of our last month in Colorado.  Get ready.... with the end of school there's a WHOLE LOT to post.  Get ready for an avalanche of pictures!  I will spare you from a lot of jibber jabber...pictures speak a thousand words anyway.

First...I had to say goodbye to my amazing Young Women!  I love these girls.  I will miss them!

  .....................................................................................................................

KJ finished his first flag football season.  He loved it.  His team did great!  He has the itch to keep playing, which makes me happy!  It was a fun learning and growing experience for him.

......................................................................................................................

Jack finished his first season on his Metal Sonics Kindergarten soccer team!
It was hilarious.  And cute.  He made me proud!
He was excited to get his very first trophy!  He got the 'award' for most goals scored...not always necessarily in the right net, but does that REALLY matter?!?

.......................................................................................................................

Olivia saved her money and bought her very first pair of rollerblades!  She is a rock star on them!  It's her new favorite thing to do!
She also had her first pre-school classmate crush (Luke) and milked her first 'fake' cow. :)

This was Olivia's 'other' crush this year.  She was head-over-heels for KJ's teacher.  Every time she would talk to him, she'd scrunch up her nose, it was adorable.
..........................................................................................................................

I was able to go with Jack's class on a field trip to the dairy farm!  I sure grew to love those little munchkins....even if they did ask me if I had a baby in my tummy.

This was Jack and his buddy Marcus on the last day of school.  I really grew to love this kid, he was ALWAYS kind and polite to Jack.  He always had his 'back'.  Which, as a mom with a kid with Asperger's, I appreciated more than he'll ever know!
..............................................................................................................................

KJ had a fun field day that I was able to go to as well!  His third grade class was awesome!  I worked in class enough to get to know each and every one of his classmates.  What an awesome group of kids! KJ will really miss some of these guys and he will especially miss his teacher.  Mr. Mathis quickly became a hero to KJ.  I feel blessed that he was placed in that class last year!  KJ was so sad to see the year end...what kid EVER says that?  I can't ever remember being sad to start summer vacation.  It just goes to show that Mr. Mathis had a big impact on that group of kids.

Saying their good-byes.  Sad day for both of them.  Tears were shed. :(

.................................................................................................................................

Olivia officially graduated from preschool!  This makes me happy and sad.  I know she's ready to start school but I'm not ready for her to keep growing up!  It was a very cute patriotic program.  She nailed her lines perfectly and sang her little heart out.  She also had a great year, made great friends, and learned a lot from her great teachers.

..........................................................................................................................

KJ and Jack also had end of the year music programs.  It is always cute.  KJ looks like he's being tortured the whole time which is always hilarious.  Jack sang along to every song and even did all the right gestures...Except for the 3 minutes he spent digging for a piece of treasure in his nose.  That's always a proud motherhood moment.

........................................................................................................................

We spent our last day with Lucy, Britt, and Shawn at their swimming pool!  She takes after her Aunt Tiff, she's a water bug.
Ahhh...I sure love that little girl.  I miss her already.  It's a good thing they are coming to visit next week!  Wahoo!

.................................................................................................................

And last, but certainly not least....Dan and I went down to Los Angeles for a Dental Conference.  Dan kept really busy with dental stuff and I didn't see him much, but we still had a blast!  Seeing my sister Heidi and my nephews was definitely THE highlight of the trip!  Everything else was fun too!  It was so good to catch up with her, see her growing baby bump and just give some of my favorite people a great big hug!  Even if the boys didn't want hugs or pictures, I forced them anyway! They're at that age.  :)

There was a TON going on in LA the weekend we were there.  Right in our hotel complex there was the American Idol finale, a Clipper's game, a King's game, the Lakers played, there was a huge Bike tour race.  It was nuts.  It was also fun, and very lively!

PDS had some fun things planned.  Had red carpets, dancing, fed us lots and lots of yummy food and had some fun entertainers.  There was a whole show of impersonators.  We saw Jay Leno, Michael Jackson, Austin Powers, Tina Turner, etc.  No expense was spared.

There was stuff planned every night for the conference, but after a couple of nights spent at bars and dancing, I wanted to do something different.  Something more...me!  We went to a Dodgers game and ate lots of good ball game food!  It was much more relaxing and we had a fun time.  Dodgers won.  They beat Dan's Cardinals.  hehe!  And after the game I ran in to the lucky strike pin...again.
We had a couple of intimate moments.  ;)

Best day of all was the day spent in my big sister's company.  She and the ocean are two things that make me extremely happy!  It also helped having Jayden and Spenc with us for a few hours.  I wanted to push the slow motion button that whole day and just soak it all in.  It flew by much too fast.  I hope I can plan another trip down there REALLY soon.

Phewwwww......
That's all I can muster up right now for this blog post.  That took much longer than I had planned.

Next post I promise I'll show pics of our new crib and some fun things we've done our first week here!

Frozen waffles...

I had a superb Mother's Day today.  My day started with the kids hopping in my warm bed and we all snuggled up.  There is nothing better.
Then Olivia disappeared and I thought she was going to go to the bathroom or something.  The next thing I know, she brought me a waffle.  An Eggo waffle.  She wanted to make sure that I had a breakfast in bed.  (unfortunately Dan was out of town this year so he wasn't there to take charge)  The waffle was still frozen in the middle and it was absolutely the cutest, most unforgettable and sweetest thing.  Then Jack had to go get me something to eat.  He brought me shredded wheat.  It was soggy by the time he brought it to me, but once again...so sweet.  KJ was smart and brought me my favorite greek yogurt.  He knows me well.  My usual breakfast.  I opened all kinds of thoughtful cards and creative art work.  I felt special.  It was the perfect start to my day.  Those kids of mine will never know the level of my love for them.  They are my everything.  They've given me the greatest gift...the gift of motherhood.  And I will love them to the ends of the earth and back.  Always.

Another thing I love about Mother's Day...church.  It is always such a special meeting.  All the Primary kids got on stage and sang the most beautiful song.  Their tiny voices were precious!  The piano music and violin were amazing.  Something about music cuts right to my soul.  Especially when I'm watching my kids up there singing to me.  It was a beautiful meeting.
After church we went to the park.  My choice of activity, although the kids had just as much fun as I did.  I love spending time outside.  Luckily the weather was just perfect.  We had a fabulous afternoon there.  :)

KJ insisted on making dinner.  He made everything and wouldn't let me help.  It was so cute watching him.  He is like a little man.  He's getting so independent.  He is very aware of my feelings and is always trying to make me happy.  It doesn't take much coming from him.  Dinner was "good".  As good as it can be when a 9 year old is cooking.  :)  But the thought was sweet.

Mother's Day has got to be one of the top 3 days of the year.  I get the chance to talk to all my favorite ladies.  Thank them for their examples.  Tell them I love them.  They have made me who I am today and for that, I am forever grateful for their presence in my life.

Grandma Howard.  She is always so thoughtful to send cards and packages to our family.  The most selfless lady ever.  She really loves my kids and they love her right back.  We all love the opportunity to see them, it's always a fun time.  She goes above and beyond to make us feel special.  We love Grandma Howard!!!

My Nana Smidt.  The sweetest lady you will ever meet...hands down.  I don't know anyone who would disagree.  She is who I want to be when I grow up.  I love her to death.

Nana Raine...the funniest lady you will ever meet.  :)  She was like my second mom growing up.  I think I pretty much spent every weekend at her house.  She loves little Jack-Jack and he loves her right back.  Always wants to snuggle with her.  She will always scratch his back and make up stories for him.  We got some cute pictures of her and Jack last summer.

Of course...MY MOM!  Look at her.  Even eating a giant turkey leg, she is beautiful.  I'm not sure many people could pull that off.  :)  My mom has no idea how much I admire her.  There actually aren't words.  A young mom, yet the wisest lady I know.  She has taught me more about life than anyone.
We had THE BEST childhood ever.  I am so blessed.

One more I had to share.  I found this old picture of me and nana the other day.  When I was very sick, she was instantly there.  Week after week.  She would come and spend hours in the hospital with me and would read me books and try not to make me laugh.  This shows the love of a grand-Mother.

I was searching for the best quote that I could use for Mother's Day.  I love quotes.  Needless to say, I found far too many.  I'm going to share my top 10.

Happy Mother's Day to ALL moms.  Hope you all got spoiled and had the chance to feel loved.

And a side note.  All our stuff is packed.  It's all on this truck.  I am anxious to get to Boise and get organized and have furniture!!!  I feel like I'm back in college.  Eating off a card table.  Mattress on the floor.  It has actually been kind of fun.  Makes me realize I don't REALLY need too much.  Stuff is not what's important in life.

5 1/2 days...

is all the time I have left before the movers come and load up all our 'stuff'.  Yikes, I guess I can no longer procrastinate on getting everything wrapped and packed.  I know, I know...it's only been a year since we've lived in beautiful Fort Collins, but don't you know by now that the Howard's love to move?  Some people have started calling us gypsies, which seems fitting as we have moved 3 times over the last 3 years.  4 times after this upcoming move.  I have become a moving pro!

This is what my family room looks like.

I do have to say that with every new location, I have learned that no matter where I live, I have been lucky to find the best people.  I have had the opportunity to know THE BEST PEOPLE in the world.  I have loved each and every new adventure.  Some more that others, but it has taught me a lot.  I have learned that this world is FULL of good and kind people.  I have learned that our own attitude about life determines whether we are happy or not.  No one or no place can make you happy, it's all about positivity.  I have also learned that as long as my little family has each other, everything will be just fine.  I have learned that I love being part of the Church.  Every place we go, it is the same.  It is consistent.  It continues to teach and inspire.  It is such a comfort to me and the kids.

We are moving home to Idaho.  (Meridian to be exact)

From the time I was a baby, I have always been a 'daddy's girl'.  We were inseparable and I joined him on every one of his job sites during the summer.  I loved riding along with him in his tan, stick-shift, Toyota truck, full of tools.  Everyone in the Hardware store knew me by name.
Me and dad when I was a baby. :)

We have always been close.  I miss him when we are so far.  I will be happy to be back to be back by him.  And my mom, who has become my best friend.  And my sister, brother-in-law, nephew and tons and tons of family.  It'll be 'cousin-galore' for the kids.  Family is the most important thing in the world to me.  The kids are ECSTATIC. I was worried when we sat them down to talk to them about the possible move back that they would be annoyed or mad or confused.  Nope.  Instantly they all jumped up and said "YES!!!"  Which in turn, made our decision a whole lot easier.
The past few weeks I've really had mixed emotions.  I have had the chance to work with the best group of women and young women at church.  I may have been a leader to the youth, but they taught me more that I ever taught them.  I will miss them.
I have also had the chance to be about an hour from my little sister Britt and her ADORABLE little family.  I will miss them dearly.  This makes me cry as I type.  I'm such a big baby.  I wish we could have been a bit closer, but we still got to see each other about every month or so.  I have loved having the chance to be a part of Lucy's first year of life!  I have been close enough to see each and every stage.  Sitting, rolling, hand and knees, eating solids, time in the pool, diaper changes and I've seen her grow from a skinny little newborn to a squishy and solid toddler.  I have loved spending every holiday with them.  I will miss them the most.  My kids will miss them too.  (Tears)  This is THE MAIN reason I have a hard time leaving Colorado.  Well, that and the beautiful weather. :)  My sister is strong and independent and her family is loving and thriving here in Colorado.  They are loving the new adventures Colorado brings to them, so I know they will be just fine.  My heart will break saying goodbye to Lucy Lu though.  Luckily Britt is really good at keeping in touch with pictures and videos, she's always been good about that!

But, I know we are making the right decision.  Jack has a great need to be around people who know his social quirks, who invite him to play.  It's been hard for him this year to watch his brother and sister have play-dates and birthday parties and neighborhood friends to come and play with.  Sadly, he doesn't have any boy kids his age in our neighborhood so he's felt a little bit lonely.  But, he can't wait to play with Griffin (my parent's dog) and play with Connor and Tyler (his cousins).  And Jesse when he gets home from his mission.  We are all looking forward to camping and boating and reuniting with everyone we've missed up in Idaho.
We've had lots of soccer games and football games and end-of-school performances over the past few weeks and have missed having family there to help cheer!  So it will be nice to have that support when we move back.
I am moving the first week of June. (our rental is done June 1st, and can not be renewed month-to-month)  The day after school gets out.  It will be pure craziness!  Dan will be coming up in November.  We will be apart again for a few months, but we've done it before and we will survive.  Divide and conquer is our new 'phrase'.

So, for now, I will most likely be signing off for a while until we get settled in our new place.  I still haven't seen the new house.  My parents went and looked at it for me and they say it is perfect.  So, I am anxious to see it for the first time when we move there.  All I wanted was a large fenced yard, a big pantry, a school close enough to walk to, and a three car garage.  All things I've missed out on over the past year.  Things I used to take for granted!
As I mentioned a couple of years ago before a move, the words of Walt Disney come to mind... "We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths."
Or this quote. Both are fitting.

We've come full circle.  We started our little family in Boise and are finally heading back.  We just had some 'stepping stones' or 'detours' along the way, leading us right back to where we started.

Wish me luck...this may just put me in the loony bin.

Let me know if you want our new address and I'll send a post card in the mail.  XOXO
